A concubine was a type of mistress with whom a man had regular sexual relations, but to whom he was not married. A concubine was considered property of the man, and it would have been dishonourable for another man to have sex with her. However she did not have the rights of a wife and her children were not rightful heirs.
Concubinage was common in Jewish and early Christian communities as well. Roman citizens were only allowed to marry one woman, but concubines were common in Roman culture as well.
