Patriarchy

Patriarchy was the social norm in Old Testament, and New Testament times. Many aspects of Patriarchy have been present in western culture until very recent history.

"'Patriarchy is a social system in which males hold primary power and predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property. Some patriarchal societies are also patrilineal, meaning that property and title are inherited by the male lineage."

"Women depended on men economically. Women generally did not own property except in the rare case of inheriting land from a father who didn't bear sons. Even "in such cases, women would be required to remarry within the tribe so as not to reduce its land holdings"

Exodus 21:7-8  (NET Bible)

“If a man sells his daughter as a female servant, she will not go out as the male servants do.  If she does not please her master, who has designated her for himself, then he must let her be redeemed. He has no right to sell her to a foreign nation, because he has dealt deceitfully with her.

1 Timothy 2:12  (NET Bible)

 1 Corinthians 11:3-10  (NET Bible)
But I want you to know that Christ is the head of every man, and the man is the head of a woman, and God is the head of Christ.  Any man who prays or prophesies with his head covered disgraces his head.  But any woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered disgraces her head, for it is one and the same thing as having a shaved head.  For if a woman will not cover her head, she should cut off her hair. But if it is disgraceful for a woman to have her hair cut off or her head shaved, she should cover her head.  For a man should not have his head covered, since he is the image and glory of God. But the woman is the glory of the man.  For man did not come from woman, but woman from man. Neither was man created for the sake of woman, but woman for man.  For this reason a woman should have a symbol of authority on her head, because of the angels.

 Colossians 3:18  (NET Bible)
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.
