-- SUMMARY THOUGHTS --

It seems some Christians think Jesus came to emphasise an extremely high standard of sexual ethics.  Christian views around sexuality seem to be used as a litmus test for who is a real follower of Christ, and who is not.

The Religious leaders of Jesus day had a lot of religious rules. Jesus was often at odds with these religious people because they were placing unnecessary religious burdens on the people. However those religious leaders didn't have as many rules about sex as many religious leaders do today.

Ancient Jewish (and early Christian) religious leaders did not have any rules about the following:

However, today most people believe that:
  • Women should have equal rights to those of men
  • Girls should wait until they are adults before getting married
  • If virginity is important for girls, it should be for boys too
  • Women should be part of the decision to get married, and who they'll have sex with
  • Monogamy is the ideal
  • Having concubines is not OK
  • Nobody should have sex with slaves
  • Nobody should have sex with prisoners of war
  • If someone gets raped, they shouldn't marry the rapist

We have moved beyond the sexual ethics of the Bible.

And that is a good thing.
